recreation.ucsc.edu JOB SUMMARYUnder the general supervision of the Aquatic Manager, the Lifeguard will ensure the safety of patrons in and around the pool facility.
The primary duties of the Lifeguard may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Supervising patrons.
- Assisting in the implementation of swimming programs.
- Enforcing all pool rules and regulations, as well as state health and safety laws.
- Responding to emergency situations; administering first aid and primary care as needed, and completing accident/incident forms.
- Conducting public relations; offering program information, handling or referring public complaints.
- Attending and participating in all in-service training sessions.
- Reporting all pool repairs and hazards.
- Conducting inventory of and maintaining equipment and supplies.
- Maintaining pool deck and guard areas in a clean and orderly fashion.
- Removing and replacing pool covers, as assigned.
- Moving bulkhead and lane lines to meet long/short course pool requirements.
- Performing all other duties as assigned.

JOB DUTIES90% - Patron Safety - Monitors activities in and near the water through patron surveillance.
- Prevents injuries by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors.
- Enforces facility rules and regulations and educate patrons about them.
- Recognizes and responds quickly and effectively to all emergencies.
- Administers first aid and CPR/AED when needed.
5% - Cleaning / Disinfecting - Cleans and disinfects all materials and high touch points on a regular basis throughout the shift.
5% - Staff Training - Attends and completes all monthly staff training (virtual and in person).
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS - Ability to think critically and act quickly and decisively when observing potential distress in the aquatic environment.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of employees, including other lifeguards, facility staff, and management.
- Ability to work independently to complete functions of the job.
- Interpersonal skills sufficient to interact courteously with patrons.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - Oxygen Administration for the Professional Rescuer.
- First Aid for Public Safety Personnel Certification.
- EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) Certification.
- Previous lifeguard experience.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT - Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Candidate must be currently certified in Lifeguard Training/CPR/AED and First Aid from a nationally recognized organization in order to be eligible for the position.
- Ability to perform essential physical job functions, with or without accommodation, that may require sitting, standing, swimming, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, carrying, hearing, and seeing.
- Ability to swim 500 yards in 8 minutes. The ability to tread water without using your hands for 3 minutes.
- Ability to work a variable schedule. Ability to start the workday as early as 5:30am on occasion.
- Must be available to work shifts throughout the year including during midterms, finals week and breaks.
- Selected candidate will be required to wear proper lifeguard attire (red and white uniforms).
- The University of California has implemented a COVID-19 Vaccination Policy covering all employees. To be compliant with the policy, covered employees must submit proof of vaccination or have an approved exception or deferral, eight (8) weeks from date of hire.
