Associate Swim Teacher & Lifeguard

SUMMARY:
The associate swim teacher and lifeguard position is a full-time, 12-month position that primarily works in the 55,000 ft Athletics and Wellness Center located at 406 East 91st Street as a part of the school’s aquatics and physical education team. The work schedule for this position is Monday - Friday 5:30 am - 1:30 pm.
This person's primary responsibilities will include planning and assistant teaching 8-10 swim classes per week as part of the Pre-K through 8th grade physical education program (approximately 20 hours per week). They will collaborate with the swim teaching team and be responsible for lesson planning, curriculum development, and delivery of high-quality swim instruction. This position will also be responsible for pool supervision as a lifeguard for various programs throughout the day (approximately 20 hours per week) and is responsible for the overall safety of the pool, the deck surrounding the pool, and locker rooms adjacent to the pool during these times. Administrative tasks will be delegated on an as needed basis by the Aquatics Director and/or Division Head of Athletics & Wellness. Salary is competitive and there is the potential to earn additional coaching stipends on top of the base salary.
Teaching Responsibilities:
- Prepare and assistant teach approximately 8-10 physical education swim classes per rotation for students in grade Pre-K through 8th grade at Convent of the Sacred Heart on a schedule as set forth by the Physical Education Department Chair and Aquatics Director
- Participate in all aspects of classroom management, curriculum design, and lesson preparation and instruction
- Provide a warm and inviting classroom community that promotes a positive and productive learning environment in which each student feels a sense of belonging
- Differentiate instruction to support group and individual learning, and provide additional support to students in small groups and one-to-one as needed
- Evaluate and assess student performance in physical education classes.
- Collaborate with the swim teaching team to ensure Sacred Heart swim curriculum and instruction is of the highest quality.
- Responsible for bus and locker room supervision as scheduled by the PE Department Chair.
Lifeguard Responsibilities:
- Lifeguard daily swim group sessions (including physical education classes) as scheduled by the Aquatics Director for approximately 20 hours per week. This includes opening the pool Monday - Friday beginning at 5:30 am.
- Ensure the safety of the pool, remaining diligent and alert through all shifts.
- Respond to any incident or emergency in the pool area, including the locker rooms.
- Enforce the rules of the pool for every client and program.
- Keep the pool deck and surrounding areas clean and organized.
- During physical education classes, support the lead teacher in the most efficient way possible.
- Work with the security staff to effectively communicate with clients and respond to emergencies.
- Attend any supportive duties set forth by the Aquatics Director.
- Assist in training of the lifeguard in-service meetings.
- Check lifeguard equipment regularly, and alert the Aquatics Director of any issues relating to safety.
Other Responsibilities:
- Assist in administrative tasks as set forth by the Aquatics Director and/or Division Head of Athletics & Wellness.
- Provide support on the pool deck as required for CSH summer programs
- Interact with multiple internal and external constituents on a daily basis for program development, management, and maintenance.
- Ensure good professional and collaborative relationships with colleagues.
- Maintain congruence between the school and the mission to all constituents as articulated in the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart schools
- Take part in all department meetings and all-school faculty meetings and professional development sessions.
Qualifications/Skills:
- Bachelor's degree
- Certified as a Lifeguard and Professional Rescuer, including up-to-date CPR, First Aid, and Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) training.
- Experience in working with elementary and middle school-aged children, especially in an aquatics environment.
- Experience teaching swim lessons and coaching swim teams.
- Solid understanding of child development, including cognitive, social, and emotional development
- Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Extremely detail-oriented
- A record of integrity, reliability, and punctuality.
- The physical ability to perform routine pool duties including lifting and moving pool lines, lifeguard stands, touch pads, and other pool equipment.
- A willingness to assist in additional responsibilities as set forth by the Aquatics Director and/or the Division Head of Athletics & Wellness.
This position will also participate in the CSH Associate Teacher Mentoring Program. This is a two-year program in which Associate Teachers regularly meet with a mentor. The vision of the program is for Associate Teachers to work with a mentor, so together they can create a space where every child can achieve her greatest potential. Mentors will share feedback with Associate Teachers to help them gain experience and new understandings toward their goal of becoming better teachers. This is an opportunity for regular in-house professional development. In the second year of the program, Associate Teachers may be given more classroom responsibility at the discretion of the mentor, and with the guidance of the Head of Athletics and Wellness.
