Under the supervision of the Director of Fitness, Wellness, and Inclusion, the Assistant Director of Aquatics oversees the execution of the day-to-day operation of the Avery Recreational Pool and the development and management of aquatic recreational programming. This position is responsible for scheduling aquatic facilities for recreational swim, club sports, intramural sports, university group use and special events. Responsibilities also include recruitment, hiring, training, evaluation and continuing education of staff; marketing programs to participants; assessment of programs to meet tangible metrics for success; ensuring programs meet and exceed industry trends; and tracking program goals and usage.
Your responsibilities include:
Staff Management (40%)
Direct the recreational aquatics area for Recreation and Wellness including providing leadership and supervision of the full-time Aquatics Coordinator, lifeguards, water safety instructors and other aquatics support staff.
Responsible for the management of staff, including recruitment, hiring, scheduling, motivation, evaluation, discipline and retention.
Plan monthly/quarterly staff training.
Train staff in the use of the recreational aquatic facility, including how to proactively address safety and risk management concerns.
Ensures staff have and maintain all required certifications.
Ensures customer encounters are courteous, respectful and efficient.
Administrative Responsibilities (30%)
Schedule aquatics programming, recreational swim, club sports, intramural sports, university group use and special events. Ensure prompt and effective verbal and written communication.
Use recreation software to ensure all aquatic program information is input into the registration software.
Implement, administer and evaluate day-to-day operations of aquatics program(s); solve problems and make decisions that impact the direction of the program.
Monitor the annual aquatic recreational budget to include staffing and revenue projections.
Collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommend changes to achieve the goals of the aquatics program.
Collect satisfaction surveys and customer response forms; create reports and recommend solutions.
Program Management (30%)
Manage the day-to-day operations of the Avery Recreational Pool.
Organize and/or conduct lifeguard and water safety instructor certification classes for revenue generation and staff recruitment.
Coordinate the setup, management, and takedown of all aquatic recreational special events.
Provide content to the marketing department with aquatics program information to support the communication, outreach and marketing of all aquatics programs.
Develop and execute a tactical plan to meet program objectives.
Review, evaluate, and recommend changes to aquatics policies and procedures with constant regard to the department's strategic plan.
Work with Athletics Facilities and Pool Maintenance Staff on adherence to facility safety guidelines and cleanliness standards.
Implement policies and procedures including emergency action plans, and standard operating procedures.
Purchasing and maintaining safe equipment
Serves on Recreation and Wellness, DAPER, and campus committees as directed.
Conducts other duties and assists other Recreation and Wellness staff as necessary.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree and three years of related experience or a combination of relevant education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrated knowledge of aquatic programming and risk management.
Highly organized and superb attention to detail.
Interpersonal customer service skills and mature judgment required to interact effectively and collaboratively with a broad range of people, including program areas, stakeholders, vendors, and equipment suppliers, both individually and in groups.
Demonstrated ability to take initiative and set priorities in order to perform a high volume of detailed work with constant interruptions, while meeting expected deadlines and schedules.
Ability to use proper judgment around maintaining equipment while considering and working around a highly populated area.
Ability to be resourceful and creative in problem-solving while not sacrificing quality or safety of the environment.
Ability to coordinate daily activities including work scheduling, quality assurance, monitoring of activities, and supervision of personnel.
Knowledge of part-time or student management leadership and strategies
Ability to exert physical effort, including the ability to lift a minimum of 20 lbs., bending, squatting, reaching, or being on feet for long periods of time.
Certifications and Licenses
Current LGIT, WSI, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED and First Aid certification, or ability to obtain by start date.
CPO or AFO preferred
