Pacific hake supports one of the most important commercial fisheries on the US West Coast (generating $60 million in 2017) and is also one of the most abundant predators in the California Current Ecosystem (CCE). Investigating the relationships between hake trophic interactions and population dynamics is an important research need for stock assessment and ecosystem-based management. The postdoctoral scholar will quantify the relationship of hake consumption to prey availability, including specific prey items such a small hake and krill, to more accurately assess hake growth, mortality, and recruitment to inform stock assessment models. This will be accomplished by evaluating the influence of hake in the CCE food web using an implementation of the CEATTLE (Climate-Enhanced, Age-based model with Temperature-specific Trophic Linkages and Energetics) ecosystem model with the newly available hake diet data.
The anticipated start date is June 25, 2021, but this is negotiable. The initial appointment is for 1 year, with reappointment possible pending performance review and funding availability. Applications should be submitted, but the position will remain open until filled. This is a full-time position located at the University of Washington in Seattle. The post-doc will be supervised by Dr. André Punt (University of Washington) and will primarily collaborate with Drs. Melissa Haltuch, Kristin Marshall, Isaac Kaplan, and Elizabeth Phillips (NOAA Northwest Fisheries Science Center).
Developing a CEATTLE model for California Current Pacific hake;
Working closely with researchers at University of Washington and the Northwest Fisheries Science Center to parameterize the CEATTLE model;
Conducting projections of the CEATTLE model under various harvest strategies and climate scenarios;
Working collaboratively in a team setting and participating in group meetings; and
Preparing results and leading writing efforts for peer-reviewed publications and presentations at scientific conferences.

PhD or foreign equivalent in Quantitative Ecology, Fisheries Science, Applied Statistics or a related field.
Experience fitting complex models to diverse data sets;
Experience or training in fish population dynamics, bioenergetics models, multispecies or ecosystem modelling, and simulation experiments
Proficiency in programming languages such as R, and/or related applications such as AD Model Builder, and Template Model Builder.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ability to work in a collaborative setting.
Experience or training in and multispecies stock assessment models.
